Steps to Resolve Norton’s Secure VPN Experiencing Connection Error

 


This issue arises due in case the Norton Secure VPN is unable to establish robust connectivity with the VPN server. Ensure that your device has a secure internet connection.

To resolve this issue, you have to uninstall and reinstall the WAN Miniport drivers and reset the network adapter settings. In case the issue is still disturbing your antivirus setup, you should uninstall and reinstall Norton.

Step 1: Uninstall & reinstall WAN Miniport drivers

  • Use the command Window + R to launch the Run dialog tab.
  • Enter the text devmgmt.msc in that tab and then tap the Enter key.
  • In the Device Manager window, tap the cursor twice over Network adapters to maximize it.
  • In the Networks adapters option, tap the cursor twice over WAN Miniport drivers (IKEv2) to check the driver properties.

(Tip: In case you are unable to search for the WAN Miniport drivers (IKEv2) under Network adapter, from the menu on the upper side, tap View, then tap on Show hidden devices.)

  • On the Driver window, tap Uninstall or Uninstall device.
  • Follow the prompt if you get any.
  • Repeat the lines 4 to 6 to eliminate the various drivers:
    • WAN Miniport drivers (IP)
    • WAN Miniport drivers (IPv6)
  • Follow the prompts and eliminate the WAN Miniport and TAP drivers.
  • In the Device Manager window, from the toolbar on the upper side, tap Action and then Tap the cursor on Scan for hardware changes.
  • Follow the prompts to perform the WAN Miniport device driver installation with ease.

After the completion of the device driver installation process, you can start Norton and turn on Secure VPN. In case the issue persists, continue with Step 2.

Step 2: Reset network adapter and TCP/IP stack

  • Use the command Windows + R to launch the Run dialog tab.
  • Enter the text “cmd” in that tab, and then tap the Enter key.
  • In the Command Prompt tab, enter the text “netsh winsock reset” and then tap the Enter key. (The moment Winsock reset completes, the alert “Winsock reset completed successfully” comes on the screen in the Command Prompt tab.
  • In the Command Prompt tab, enter the “netsh int ipv4 reset” and then tap the Enter key. (In case you use IPV6, enter “netsh int ipv6 reset” and tap the Enter key.
  • Close all the programs and restart your computer.

Step 3: Inspect the root certificates for Secure VPN

  • Use the command by tapping on Windows + R keys to launch the Run dialog tab.
  • Enter the text certim.msc, and then tap the Enter key.
  • Maximize the Personal folder and then tap on the Certificates option.
  • In the pane on the right-hand side, beneath the Issued by category, search for the SurfEasy entries. {Inspect if the “Surf Easy certificates” are installed in the Local Machine Certificate store. (Personal, Trusted Root and Intermediate Certificate)}
  • In case you find numerous SurfEasy entries, remove the old certificates.

To check the installation date for Norton, use the following steps:

  • Use the command Windows + R to launch the Run dialog tab.
  • Enter the text “appwiz.cpl”, and then tap the Enter key.
  • From the list of installed programs, search for the Norton 360 or Norton Secure VPN and take a look at the “installed on” date.
  • Match the Norton install date with the expiry date of Surfeasy certificates and remove the copied ones.
  • Close the Certificate Manager window.
  • Now, Launch Norton and turn on the Secure VPN.

In case you are reencountering the error. Use the following steps:

Step 1: Uninstall Norton

  • Use the command Window + R to launch the Run dialog tab.
  • Enter the text “appwiz.cpl” in that tab and then tap the Enter key.
  • In the sorted list of installed programs, tap the Norton 360 and tap on the Remove or Uninstall option.
  • Tap the cursor over the “Please remove all user data” option.
  • In the Subscription Period Warning tab, tap the Next option.
  • Tap the cursor over Restart Now.

To complete the uninstallation process of Norton 360, you have to restart your computer at least once.

Step 2: Download Norton from your Norton account

  • Log in to your Norton account.
  • In case you are not logged in to your Norton account automatically, you will get the instructions on the screen to log in. Enter your account credentials for Norton, and then tap Log in.
  • In case you don’t have an existing Norton account, tap on the create a new account option and then fill in your details to complete the account creation process.
  • In the Get Started tab, tap on Download Norton.

(Tip: In case you want to install a new product that has no registration with your Norton account, tap Enter a New Product Key and then type the product key or code to start the download.)

  • Tap on the Agree & Download button.
  • Do any one of the following depending on the browser you are using:
    • For Windows: Use the command Ctrl + J to launch the Downloads tab in your browser, and tap the cursor twice on the file that you downloaded.
    • For Mac: Use the command Command + Option + L to launch the Downloads tab in your browser, and tap the cursor twice over the file you have download.
  • Tap Agree & Download.
  • Do any of these two options depending on the type of browser you are using:
  • For Windows: Using the command Ctrl + J, open the Downloads tab in your browser and double-tap the cursor over the file you have downloaded.
  • For Mac: Using the command Command + Option + L to launch the Downloads tab in your browser, and double-tap the file you have downloaded.
  • In case the User Account Control window comes over your computer screen, tap Continue.
  • Follow the prompts coming on your screen.

You have successfully installed and activated Norton on your computer.
